Golfers Second in District, XC Wins Section Title

The golf team continued its record-breaking pace Friday, Oct. 8 at the District Three Championships held at Honey Run Golf Club in York County. Matt and Ben Wilson, along with Gehrig Harsh and Morgan Smith, shot a combined 304 in the team portion of the competition which was good for second place. Dallastown, with a 298, captured the AAA team title.

"That was our lowest score in school history," said head coach Mike Chiodo. "It was our best match of the year and the first time we qualified as a team. I was thrilled. This was a tight match the whole way."

Matt and Ben Wilson carded a 1-under par 72 for their lowest round of the year. Harsh finished with an 80 and Smith was two strokes back, both hitting their average on the season.

Individually, the Wilson brothers advanced to Saturday's second round by making the 79-stroke cut. Matt, with a 79 on Saturday, finished with a two-day 150 total and tied for fourth while Ben carded an 80 for a 151 and tied for seventh place. They are two of the top 18 that were inside the 158 cut and qualified for the PIAA Championships.

"Saturday's conditions were more challenging," said Chiodo. "It was windy, the pin placements were tougher, and we played longer tees. Very few kids shot better the second day. This is the first year we've had two boys qualify for states," he continued.

Emily Chiodo and Cory Gast both qualified in 2007.

Molly Buher's second half goal, assisted by Tonna Harnish, proved to be the game winner over the Raiders while a balanced effort provided a 4-0 result over the Spartans. Chloe Buchler and Jenna Daveler, who scored on a penalty kick, provided first half tallies while Hannah Cisne and Ashlynn Keys scored in the second half with determined efforts on rebound goals.

The tennis team opened post-season action in the L-L League Flight tournament which got underway on October 7. Rising to the top of their bracket was Lindsey Steele and Katie Finn with an 8-3 championship round result over Donegal.

"Our third doubles team played fantastic throughout the tournament and took the title easily," said head coach Mark Trach.

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team posted mixed results over the last week, topping Solanco 3-1 on Oct. 7 before dropping a 3-1 result at home on the 12th against Manheim Central.

L-S rocketed to a 25-12 first set against Solanco but each of the next three sets were determined by five points or less with L-S prevailing 25-22 in the final set. Chloe Nolt's five aces and Emily Mullin's 11 kills along with 13 setups by Riley Stoltzfus sparked the offense. Mullin and Alexis Moran each provided two blocks with Morgan Lapp hustling for 14 digs.

Action against the third place Barons on "Dig Pink" night was another nail-biter. The largest victory went to the visitors who claimed the first and fourth sets 25-22. The middle sets were closer with Manheim pulling out a 25-23 win, after nine ties, in the second set and L-S answering with the same result in set three.

Mullin racked up a team-high 12 kills, Stoltzfus distributed 18 assists and served four aces, while Leah Denlinger added 10 digs. For more photos see townlively.com

FIELD HOCKEY

After a disappointing 4-3 loss to Elizabethtown, the field hockey recorded four straight wins before a 4-0 loss to CV on the 13th.

They beat Cocalico 3-1, snuck past Donegal 2-1, then blanked Cedar Crest 2-0 on Oct. 8 and crushed Solanco 5-zip on the 11th.

With 16 corners, the Pioneers dominated Cedar Crest despite scoring just twice. Maggie Swarr, taking a feed from Keiva Middleton, and Lyndi Wall, unassisted, provided the win with fourth quarter goals.

"Lyndi Wall was the turning point," said head coach Katrina Swarr. "We moved her to offense, after her championship sprinting season in track, because she is fast. She keeps the ball on her stick nicely and passes at the right time."

The Pioneers found their way through Solanco's grass field with a dominating performance. "Grass is a challenge," said Swarr. "We wanted the ball in the air as much as possible. Marissa Rice continued to amaze me with her stick work and passing distribution."

Wall and Tori Heiserman each scored twice, and Middleton added one.

FOOTBALL

Lampeter-Strasburg's football team posted its third shutout of the season crushing visiting Donegal 55-0 Friday, Oct. 8. The Pioneers recovered three fumbles, had a pair of safeties, and scored five of their seven touchdowns en route to a 41-0 lead at the half.

Andrew Reidenbaugh started the scoring with a 21-yard field goal, the result of a Donegal fumble.

Donegal's ensuing drive ended with a safety and Giovanni Malatesta's two-yard TD run pushed the lead to 12-zip. Another Indian fumble set up QB Berkeley Wagner (6-for-18, 115 yards) who found Beau Heyser with a 21-yard toss and a 19-0 lead in the first.

Donegal fumbled a third time early in the second quarter and once more L-S capitalized. This time Gio Malatesta scored from five yards out.

Wagner set up the final two scores of the half, hitting Peyton Cunningham and then finding Carson Coleman. The Pioneers earned their second safety with less than two minutes left in the half. They also caused five total fumbles with Nick DelGrande causing three and recovering one. Weston Weaver recovered two.

L-S went to the bench in the second half and the Pioneer success continued with a pair of third quarter scores. Julian Lopez, who finished with 101 yards, raced 23-yards to paydirt in the third and backup QB Trent Wagner added a five-yard keeper.

"Julian and Trent played well in the second half," said head coach Victor Reidnour, "as did our O-line (Braden Bauer, Bryce Thomas, Ezechiel Lukusa and Cole Younger).

"Our return teams also did a good job with Payton Cunningham (kick returner) and Gio Malatesta (punt returner) setting up great field position all night."
