Harrier Teams Host McCaskey, Penn Manor
The cross-country team welcomed McCaskey and Penn Manor to Witmer on the 13th with the boys enjoying a 2-0 day while the Lady Buckskins stumbled to 0-2 on the day.
All five boys' team scorers finished in the top 11, leading to narrow wins over McCaskey (25-30) and Penn Manor (24-32). Timothy Gitonga and Joshua Yoder led the way crossing a mere six seconds apart to snag 3rd and 4th. Carson Miller (7th), Micah Kao (9th) and Joey Castronova (11th) rounded out the scoring five.
The winless day on the girl's side came despite CV having four of the top 11 finishers, including a 9th-10th-11th run from Abigail Phillips, Ballemarie Alston and Kylee Antrim. Seana Dougherty posted the top Lady 'Buck finish, taking fourth with a time of 22:02.
BOYS' SOCCER
When your team is cooking in the world of sports, like the CV boys' soccer team was to open the season, you never want the good times to end. Unfortunately for the Buckskins they did stop cooking as their 2-1 start was followed by a 1-2 stretch, leaving the 'Bucks sitting at 3-3.
The first setback came on September 7th when Hempfield netted all three scores in a 3-0 final during the game's final 15-minutes. Jacob Carr turned away three shots in the loss.
The Buckskins hit the road on the 10th for a trip to Great Valley where the result was a long trip home from Malvern thanks to a 1-0 loss. Carr finished with nine saves but was unable to stop a Liam Hutchinson shot in the 9th minute that proved to be the game-winner. Trevor Forney added two saves.
Conestoga Valley returned to the L-L for their next tilt, hosting Penn Manor on the 13th. The familiar setting gave CV a spark leading to a 1-0 victory and that 3-3 mark. Kaden Bredeman picked up the game winner, with help from Landen Sunday while Carr needed just two saves to post the shutout.
GOLF
History was made at Meadia Heights Golf Club on September 12th as the CV golf team posted a perfect 4-0 mark, topping Warwick by two strokes, Solanco (by 4), Elizabethtown and Ephrata, improving their record to 9-7 in the process. "The home course advantage played to our favor, as our team was more familiar with the challenging course," said first year head coach Brandon Hershey. "I'm so proud of everyone's efforts. We are excited about the direction that our program is headed!"
Carson Hoover's 40 was CV's lowest score on the abbreviated day with Thomas Kowalski (42), Ethan Tardibuono (42) and Mason Tardibuono (44) rounding out the four scorers.
FIELD HOCKEY
CV's field hockey team continues to roll, adding three more victories to their win column, pushing them to a flashy 5-2 mark on the year. Lady Buckskin's two most recent wins resulted in a title at the Donegal Tournament on September 10th. CV opened with a 6-1 demolition of Susquehanna Township before taking the crown with a 4-1 win over the host Lady Indians.
Alaina Culbert and Mikyla Rineer netted three scores each while Jamie Handwerger chipped in with two scores. Sophie Hess and Emily Lapp cleaned up the remaining goals while Elizabeth Tally needed just one save to capture both wins.
Conestoga Valley's lead-in to the Donegal tourney title was a 5-3 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg on the 8th. Handwerger picked up a hat trick, helping to cap the win with two fourth quarter scores. Sophia Livingston nabbed the final fourth quarter score while Rineer scored in the second quarter. Tally secured the win with a four save game.
TENNIS
The girl's tennis team shook off a three-match losing streak by topping Warwick 7-0 on September 8th and kept the good times rolling by taking the team title at the Buckskin Invitational on the 10th.
CV dominated the competition at the Buckskin Invite, taking the top spot in four of the five singles brackets and both doubles brackets. Jade Flores, Paula Valverde-Gomez, Sydney Harris, and Paige Harris secured the singles titles while Sierra Land finished fourth in the final singles bracket. Trixie Obeng and Rachel Tsai took the top spot in number one doubles while Sandy Wahba and Aleksandra Saran did the same in number two doubles.
GIRLS' SOCCER
The girls' soccer team kicked off league play on a high note, knocking off Hempfield on the 7th but came crashing back on the 13th with an 8-0 loss to Penn Manor.
Gabbie Moore totaled 18 saves with five coming in the 1-0 win over the Lady Knights. Asha Marwaha netted the game winner in the 50th minute but head coach Tom Erickson was quick to credit his defense for the win. "The key to the win was the outstanding play of our senior defenders; Anna Kaufman, Elyse Emery, Taylor Horst, and Asha Marwaha. They did a great job stifling the Hempfield attack and getting the shutout."
VOLLEYBALL
The first loss of a season is usually the most difficult to swallow and for the girls' volleyball team that loss went down September 13th. Match scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-20 led to a 3-0 final with Hempfield claiming the win. Summer Getz had 17 assists, Emily Kornacki 11 digs and Becca Hartranft finished with six kills.
CV enjoyed the opposite end of a 3-0 final, collecting wins of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-13 to take down McCaskey on the 8th. The fourth straight win to open the season left head coach Devin Moore saying, "It was a team win where everyone was involved in the success."
Getz (18 assists), Hartranft (11 kills) and Kornacki (eight digs) led the way with help from Hannah Strohm (six aces) and Madison Williams (two blocks).
In between the Lady 'Bucks traveled to Ephrata where they finished second to the host team in the Ephrata Tournament. CV posted a perfect 8-0 mark in pool play earning a spot in the semifinal opposite Governor Mifflin where they suffered their first loss but still collected the win. That set up a finals showdown with Ephrata that went to the Lady Mountaineers.
Getz and Hartranft earned spots on the all-tournament team with only Ephrata having more all-stars.
FOOTBALL
The football team needed overtime and a monster game from Nick Tran, but the Buckskins were able to nip Garden Spot 41-35, improving to 2-1. Tran's big game included 270 yards and three scores, one of which was the game winner from seven yards out in overtime. The senior standout added TD runs of 82- and 60-yards, helping CV build a 28-10 lead at the break.
Spot used a 17-point third quarter to get back in the game before taking the lead with a fourth quarter score. Ish Camacho answered that TD by hauling in a 10-yard strike from Macoy Kneisley and sending the game to the extra session.
