Hempfield Boys Tops McCaskey, Dallastown

The Hempfield boys' basketball team posted a 47-36 victory at McCaskey on Friday, January 8 as the Section One schools went head-to-head in their season openers.

The Black Knights' offensive efficiency was the key in this win as they made five of nine three-point attempts and 19-of-36 field goal attempts. They outscored the Red Tornado in each of the first three quarters, holding a double-digit lead of 38-27 heading into the final period.

Ryan Hilton and Miguel Pena paced Hempfield with 11 points each. Three of Pena's baskets came from three-point range. Daniel Sears made three baskets and went 2-for-3 at the foul line for his eight points of the night.

Hasan Williams reached double figures in scoring as he poured in 10 points to lead McCaskey.

The Knights were on their home court the following afternoon. With a second-quarter turnabout, they overcame a deficit against non-league foe Dallastown, gaining a 21-16 halftime advantage. Hempfield held off Dallastown in the second half and improved to 2-0 overall with a 52-41 win.

Michael Hester scorched six baskets for the Knights, two of which were from three-point land. He led Hempfield with 14 points while Hilton tallied 11. Cole Cavanaugh had a 10-point game while Pena finished with nine points.

One of the best offensive outputs in this young basketball season came in the second quarter of Hempfield's win at Penn Manor on Monday. The Knights outscored the Comets 25-12, climbing to a 38-20 lead at halftime. The offense provided more fire in the second half as Hempfield improved to 3-0.

In the 71-49 victory, Hagel buried three treys on a 17-point night. Pena put up 13 points while Daivon Edmond-Greene and Jeremy Tran each scored eight with Tran making two treys.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The girls' team opened its season with a victory over Lancaster-Lebanon League rival McCaskey. In a Friday night game at Landisville, the Black Knights held off the Red Tornado 59-29.

In a dominant first half, Hempfield outscored McCaskey 16-4 in the first quarter and increased the lead to 28 points at intermission with a 21-5 second stanza.

Orianna Edmond led all scorers with 15 points while teammate Autumn Cook poured in a pair of treys on her 14-point performance. Lauren Moffatt and Ava Baer scored nine and eight points, respectively. Jess Weinoldt put up two baskets and went 2-for-2 at the foul line for a six-point game while Madeline Kemmick scored her points on a three-point basket.

Elaine Foley led McCaskey with seven points.

Hempfield's 11-2 run in the second quarter gave the home team a 15-9 halftime lead on Monday evening at Landisville. The Black Knights scored 17 points in each of the next two periods in a 49-27 defeat of League foe Penn Manor.

The scoring was a team effort in this win. Moffatt came through each time she was on the foul line, making all eight attempts and finishing with 10 points. Edmond had four field goals on a nine-point night and Weinoldt finished with eight points, also recording a perfect (4-for-4) game at the charity stripe. Cook added seven points while Kira Mattes posted five.

The Knights improved to 2-0 in the league.

WRESTLING

The Knights dominated Solanco and Muncy in Saturday's (Jan. 9) duals at Hempfield, pinning a 56-12 victory over Solanco and dropping Muncy 51-15.

Kamron Fickes registered a pin at the 138-pound bout to put the Knights ahead 9-6 in the Solanco match. The Golden Mules had taken a 6-3 lead with two close decisions following Seamus Mack's 3-2 defeat of Weston Bare at 120.

Reagan Lefevre dominated for a technical fall (17-2) at 145 and Dylan Bard pinned his opponent, giving the Knights a 20-6 lead. Jonah Gelbart's third-period pin at 160 and Jobeth Plaza's pin at 172 extended the advantage to 26 points.

Russell Haines took the 189-pound bout via pin and Caleb Mussmon did the same at 285 with a Solanco forfeit sandwiched in between. The two teams exchanged forfeits to close out the match.

In improving their mark to 2-0, the Knights jumped out to a commanding lead over Muncy thanks to a 5-0 decision by Jorden Williams to start things off at 106 pounds, pins by Edwards and Gio Luciano as well as a Muncy forfeit.

The Indians chipped away at the lead with a major decision at the 132-pound bout and Fickes coming up short in a 4-2 decision at 138. Lefevre's pin at 145 required only 1:39 to accomplish. Bard posted his pin with one second remaining in the first period of the 152 battle.

Leading 33-7, Hempfield continued to dominate with pins by Plaza, Hoover and Mussmon.

The Knights rolled the momentum into their first L-L League match of the year, defeating Conestoga Valley 55-12 on the road Tuesday.

Bard opened with a pin as the match started at the 152-pound class. Gelbart needed only 49 seconds for his pin at 160.

The Buckskins suffered eight falls in all as well as Luciano's 13-5 major decision, which came at the 113 bout. Along with Bard and Gelbart, Hanes pinned Zander Rider at 189. Hoover pinned at 215 and Mussmon won a 10-3 decision at 285.

Also taking their opponents to the mat were Mack (120), Edwards (126), Gainer at 132 and Lefebvre at 145.

Hempfield improved to 3-0 (1-0 league).

SWIMMING

The Hempfield girls lost a tough one to archrival Manheim Township on Tuesday. The Blue Streaks topped the Knights 124-61 at home.

Hempfield highlights included a winning effort in the 100-yard butterfly as Maggie Shaffer posted a time of 1:00.93. Shaffer went on to win the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:18.63.

Ella Root came through with a winning time of 1:08.89 in the 100 breaststroke.

The Township boys' team earned a 132-48 victory as Hempfield fell to 0-1.

Ethan Richard had an outstanding day in the diving competition, compiling 231.45 points.
