Indians Win Two of Three, Finish 12-10 Overall
The Donegal boys' basketball team wrapped up its regular season schedule with two wins in its final three games, including a thrilling 45-44 victory in the regular-season finale on Wednesday, February 9.
With that one-point win over Lancaster-Lebanon League foe Northern Lebanon, the Indians finished with a 6-7 league record.
A late afternoon non-league game on Saturday, February 5, started the final trio of games played by the Indians, who would finish with a 12-10 overall mark. Schuylkill Valley visited Mount Joy where the home team marched ahead to a 30-20 halftime lead and would hold on for a 55-37 victory.
Khalil Masden had his way with the Panthers' defense, scoring a game-high 21 points. He put up nine baskets and went 3-for-4 at the free throw line.
As he has done throughout the year, Joseph Turbedsky provided just the right amount of support for the Indians' leading scorer. Turbedsky finished with nine points, including a three-point basket. Dutch Good sank a pair of three-pointers and finished with eight points.
Playing on their home court again, the Indians welcomed the Lancaster Catholic Crusaders for a Tuesday night L-L League contest. The Crusaders improved to 6-5 in league play with a 52-43 triumph, making their 18-10 run in the opening period prove to be a big enough margin for them to withstand the momentum shifting in Donegal's favor.
The Crusaders were led by Jack Engle, who finished with a game-high 17 points. They were able to hold Masden to nine points while Good led Donegal with 11 points on the night. Both Good and Masden connected on a three-point basket. Turbedsky, Dameon White and Noah Rohrer each finished with seven points.
The season's final game was a case of the visiting Vikings going on a fourth-quarter rampage to make it a very close contest. Northern Lebanon came into Wednesday night's matchup with a 3-9 L-L League record. The Indians held the Vikings to single digit scoring in two of the first three periods and led 33-23 heading into the fourth quarter. The Vikings, paced by Peyton Wolfe's 17-point performance, had a 21-12 run in that frantic finish. It was not enough as the Indians held on for a 45-44 win.
The top offensive contributions for Donegal came in the form of a team effort again. Masden poured in 13 points with Rohrer second in scoring at 12 points on the night. Turbedsky and Cole Hunt each scored six.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL
The Donegal girls held tough against Northern Lebanon in their Wednesday night home game. The Indians trailed by only a 26-21 margin at the half. The Vikings inched ahead in the third quarter and went on to post a 44-33 victory. Donegal finished the year 2-20 (1-10 league).
Crystal Bomgardner and Ashlyn Messinger each scored 14 points to lead Northern Lebanon.
Victoria Burton scored 12 to pace the Indians. Remy White scored nine, including a three-point basket.
Donegal was coming off a league contest on the road two nights earlier. The Crusaders, led by Vivian Klemmer's 16-point game, improved to 10-0 in the L-L League with their 82-35 win.
White had a team-high 11 for the Indians. Burton finished with 10.
