Jerry Miller Recognized With Miller Mallet Trophy
Prior to the Section One match between Solanco and visiting Penn Manor on Jan. 11 in Quarryville, the two wrestling programs took a moment to recognize the life of Jerry Miller. Joining both teams on the mat was Jerry's wife, Karen Miller, along with Jerry and Karen's daughter, Tonya Grassel, and grandsons, former Penn Manor wrestlers Trevor and Ty Grassel.
Jerry, an avid support and contributor to both the Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling programs, passed away on July 29, 2022. One of Jerry's many passions in life was wrestling, and he always made Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling a priority. Jerry was an elementary wrestling coach for Solanco for many years, including when his son Troy began wrestling. He also volunteered in the Solanco Wrestling Booster Club and was one of the many people who helped with the formation of the original wrestling building at Solanco.
Later in life, as Jerry's grandsons started their careers at Penn Manor, he continued volunteering his time, now to Penn Manor, to help the program in any way he could, volunteering at many events and always being in the stands to cheer on his grandsons and the rest of the Penn Manor team.
At the time of his passing, his family asked that contributions be made to both the Penn Manor and Solanco wrestling programs to honor his memory and the commitment he had to both programs.
While Penn Manor and Solanco have shared a competitive rivalry over the years, both programs share a passion for wrestling and respect for each other, just as Jerry embodied throughout his life. The Solanco and Penn Manor match has always held a special significance to both programs, reflected by the intensity on the mat whenever these two teams meet.
In light of that, and to honor Jerry Miller's lifetime of contributions to both programs, Penn Manor and Solanco will annually battle for the Miller Mallet trophy. This mallet, complete with Jerry's hand-engraved initials, was owned by Jerry and used extensively in his metal working. Jerry's family donated the mallet to both programs as a trophy that will be awarded to the winning team from each year's dual. The Miller Mallet is intended to honor and remember Jerry's commitment to both wrestling programs and to add to the strong tradition and rivalry between Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling for years to come.
