Kelly Grabs L-L League Gold in 100 Hurdles

The Lancaster-Lebanon League track and field championships were held at Hempfield on Friday and Saturday, May 13-14. The Garden Spot girls' team had two more stellar performances from hurdler Bryna Kelly, who also competed in one of the relay races.

Kelly, who had already claimed several hurdling events in regular season dual meets, won the L-L Championship race in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a time of 15.54 seconds. She also took seventh in the 300-m hurdles at 48.22 seconds.

Also among the girls' leaders was Chloe Grady. The Spartan junior not only took fifth in the long jump with a 16-foot-9-inch effort and seventh (33-11.2) in the triple jump, but she also helped the 4x100 relay team earn third place.

Grady and Kelly teamed with Katelyn Davis and Angela Nuse for a combined time of 49.97 seconds. Nuse also was in the top eight in the 100-m dash, claiming seventh place in 12.93 seconds.

Ainslee Binkley claimed sixth place with her javelin heave of 109-1. Lauren Horning (1:02.20) and Julia Hoover (5:32.70) were both ninth in their respective races - the 400 and the 1,600.

The Garden Spot girls compiled 29 team points to finish eighth in the team standings. The boys had nine team points and finished 18th overall.

Finn Wenrich raced across the finish line in 51.18 seconds in the 400-m - good for fifth place. Gavin Miller and Kaleb Zimmerman did well in field events with Miller's 40-11.5 triple jump earning fourth place and Zimmerman's discus distance of 115-11 taking ninth.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The Garden Spot boys' volleyball team, which wrapped up the regular season by claiming second place in Section Two, suffered an opening-round defeat at Warwick in the L-L League playoffs on Friday, May 13.

Unable to overtake the Warriors in the opening set, the Spartans lost 25-17. However, the visitors bounced back with a 25-20 defeat of Warwick to tie the match at one set apiece.

Warwick went on to win another close set, 25-20, before taking the fourth one 25-16.

Tanner Laukhuff gave Garden Spot a tremendous effort by pouring in 18 kills and compiling eight digs. Tyler Martin was busy providing opportunities to the total of 38 assists. Jethro Martin finished with a team-high four blocks.
