GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The Hempfield girls' basketball team has played some impressive defense this year. That was evident in Wednesday night's Section One showdown with Manheim Township as the Black Knights earned a 30-17 victory on the road, improving to 4-0 in Lancaster-Lebanon League play (4-2 overall).

Asked about the defense being the key to the success in the early going, head coach Kendra Merrifield replied, "I think that's a huge part of it. When our girls come out and play strong defensively, we can keep teams where we want to. Our team functions better when our defense is our main focus."

Merrifield was asked if maintaining a solid defensive game was the focus coming into this season.

"It is a continued improvement," the coach replied. "Last year's group worked on that and we returned the core of that group."

Hempfield held Township to only five points in each of the first two quarters and seven points in the third. The defense blanked the Blue Streaks in the fourth quarter.

Lauren Moffatt led all scorers with 10 points. Autumn Cook scored seven.

"Lauren did a great job in the off-season improving her game," Merrifield remarked. "She has adjusted well on the perimeter and has done a great job grabbing the rebounds."

Having topped McCaskey in the season opener and defeating Penn Manor three days later, the Black Knights went on to post a 36-28 victory at Cedar Crest on Thursday, January 14. With the Township game, the Knights have kept all four L-L League opponents so far to under 30 points.

Cedar Crest managed only two points in the first quarter and was held to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.

Cook led Hempfield with eight points while Brynne Axe finished with seven. Moffatt and Ava Baer each scored six.

In a high-scoring non-league game at Wilson on Saturday, January 16, the Knights suffered a 52-46 overtime loss. The Bulldogs outscored the visitors 11-5 in the extra period.

Orianna Edmond, who went 5-for-5 at the foul line, led Hempfield with 15 points. Kira Mattes scored eight while Axe, Baer and Moffatt each finished with seven points.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Cedar Crest Falcons soared to a 47-44 comeback win at Hempfield on Thursday, January 14. They outscored the Knights 14-7 in the fourth quarter after the Knights had dominated the third period with a 19-9 run.

Miguel Pena and Ryan Hilton tied for the top scoring honors with 13 points each. Both scored twice from three-point range. Michael Hester also drilled a pair of treys and finished with eight points.

Leading the Falcons was Max Scipioni with 13 points.

As if there was some force in the universe balancing the results of events, the Knights held on for a 56-50 victory in their very next game - a home outing against section rival Manheim Township on Wednesday.

The Streaks fought back from a 26-19 deficit, looking to gain on Hempfield in the second half. The Streaks (2-2, 1-2 league) were led by J.T. Weaver, who finished with 15 points.

Hilton hit the 20-point mark on the night. The senior guard buried three treys and went 7-for-8 at the foul line. Pena added 10 while Daivon Edmond-Greene scored seven.
