Lady Bucks Take On Central, and Solanco
It is well established that fortunes can turn at the drop of a dime and the Conestoga Valley girls' basketball team would be the perfect example. A week ago, the Lady Buckskins were rocking back-to-back wins. After stinging setbacks to Solanco and Manheim Central, that has flipped to a two-game losing streak.
The January 24th setback in Manheim was a 62-26 final, a 36-point Lady Baron victory. CV started sluggish and that allowed Central to open a 22-4 cushion after the opening frame and stretch it to 38-10 at the break. The third quarter played out with the two sides going back and forth but Central posted a 9-3 edge in the final frame for the 62-26 final. Rhiannon Henry netted nine while Gabrielle Moore added seven in the loss.
Conestoga Valley's January 20th loss to Solanco was a heartbreaker. The Lady 'Bucks battled back from a nine-point halftime hole only to fall just short, losing 37-36. CV handled the bulk of their comeback coming out of the break, posting an 11-4 edge in the third. Add in the 12-11 edge in the fourth and you get the 37-36 final. Moore drilled five from long range on her way to a team high 16 points.
BOWLING
The bowling team continued to roll along, save for one small bump that occurred on January 20th in the form of a 5-2 loss to Ephrata. The Buckskins enjoyed two bowlers with 600-series in Evan Zimmerman (622) and Jocelyn Ross (607) with Ryan Muckle (592) and Ethan Tardibuono (571) just missing that mark. Despite that success CV dropped the first and third games as well as the overall pin count for that 5-2 final.
Conestoga Valley bounced back a few days later, topping Manheim Township by a 4-3 final. This time two 600-series bowlers along with two near misses were enough for CV to steal the win. Ross (643) and Muckle (640) collected the 600 series with Josiah Casler (582) and Zimmerman (574) missing that mark.
On January 18th, CV was able to knock off the other Manheim school, topping Central by a 5-2 final. Casler went crazy with games of 278, 222 and 267 to post an eye popping 767 series. Zimmerman started hot with a 227 but cooled to games of 193 and 170 for his 590 series. Danny Subers was the final Buckskin to bowl all three games, going 186, 161 and 164 for a 511 series.
SWIMMING
The boys and girls swim team hit an icy patch in the water Thursday, Jan. 19 with the boys dropping a 109-59 final while the Lady Buckskins absorbed a 121-26 loss. CV managed just two wins across both meets with both coming on the boy's side. Connor Ludwig took the top spot in the 50-free with a time of 23.23 while Daniel Ivanchikov posted the best time in the 500-freestyle, winning in 5:01.05.
BOYS' BASKETBALL
While the Lady Buckskin hoopsters have seen their fortunes flip-flop, the boys have not experienced the same. CV added two more games to their winning streak, pushing it to six straight which has upped their overall record to 9-7.
Against Solanco on the 20th, the 'Bucks used strong first and fourth quarters to leave Quarryville a 47-34 winner. CV outscored the Golden Mules 24-7 in the crucial frames while absorbing a 27-20 deficit in the first and third quarters. Griffen Rishell netted 15 as the lone CV in double digits.
Conestoga Valley's January 24th tilt with Manheim Central was a back and forth affair with the two sides taking turns setting the pace. CV took first crack at pace setting, leading to a 14-11 edge after the opening frame. Central returned serve with an 11-10 edge in the second, making it a 24-22 CV lead at the break. The Buckskins moved back in front for the third quarter, posting an 18-13 edge that stretched their lead to seven points, 42-35. The final stanza went to the Barons but the 20-18 score only reduced the final margin to five points, 60-55.
Rishell led all scorers with 22 points while Tanner Petersheim added 12 points in the win.
RIFLE
The rifle team managed to hit their mark, using a 489-487 win over Wilson to snap their seven-match slide. The goodwill from the January 19th victory was short lived as Governor Mifflin posted a 495-487 win on the 24th.
Dominic Santamaria (98 & 97), William Roland (97 & 96) and Hunter Kleckner (98 & 98) were the only three shooters to finish in the top five in each match. Lydia Salmons posted the top score against Wilson with Abanoub William matching that 99 in the Mifflin match. Sierra Land and her 97 completed the top five against Wilson while Caleb Reiff and his 97 did the same opposite Governor Mifflin.
WRESTLING
The wrestling team kept their spot at the top of the Section One standings courtesy of a 49-24 win over McCaskey on the 25th. The Buckskins claimed nine of the 13 bouts, including eight that came with bonus points. Omar Vargas had the easiest of those wins, picking up a forfeit at 114. Abdoul Akala added a major decision at 189 with Zander Rider (285), Nick Horton (107), Luke Morley (127), Miles Acosta (145), Andrew Stoltzfoos (152) and Luke Needham (160) adding pinfall wins. Teagan Ruble rounded out the evening with a decision at 139.
