Pioneers Shutout Ephrata and Warwick, Now 7-1

Lampeter-Strasburg got a one hit shutout from Kieva Middleton in Monday's (April 12) 8-0 shutout over visiting Ephrata. She did the same thing Wednesday as the Pioneers blanked Warwick 1-0 in crossover play.

Against the Mounts, Chloe Blantz collected two of Lampeter's eight hits, including a double that sparked a three run first inning. An Emily Platt triple fueled a four run second inning as L-S dominated early.

"Kieva's change up was really good," said head coach Gene Charles. "She allowed just one runner over the final four innings."

On Wednesday, Raub reached on an error and Blantz, with two outs singled to right. The ball was misplayed and Raub came racing home for the only run of the game.

"I figured one run would be big in a game like this," said Charles.

Middleton struck out nine and gave up a bloop single in the fourth as L-S improved to 7-1 overall.

The Pioneers also earned an 18-1 Friday (April 9) afternoon win over Solanco. The visitors scored the first run of the game, but it was all L-S after that. Brooke Zuber's leadoff homer sparked a 10-run second inning that also featured a 3-run blast by Ally Raub (3-3, 5 RBIs). Blantz ended the game in the third inning with a grand slam.

TENNIS

The tennis team snapped a four-game losing streak with a slim 3-2 win at Elizabethtown Monday, April 12 and followed that up with a 4-3 final over CV Wednesday. Kyle Turner and Kyle Pawson pulled out a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 come from behind doubles win while brothers Spencer and Cole Teaman earned a solid 6-3, 6-0 result to give L-S the early lead against Etown.

Andrew Reidenbaugh's shutout win at No. 3 wrapped up the scoring.

With Alex Vaziri and Spencer Teaman as Lampeter's lone doubles winners, CV held an early 2-1 lead. L-S rallied through singles play with Reidenbaugh (No. 2), Turner (No. 3) and Vaziri (No.4) all winning in straight sets.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

For the second time in four days, the Lady Pioneers racked up at least 20 goals and earned a pair of lopsided victories.

Monday, April 12 they trounced Elizabethtown 20-1 behind Rowen Kimmel's six goal (2a) effort. They led 16-zip at the half. Kelliann Drummond added four goals (2a) and both Riley Dawson and Hannah Cissne chipped in with hat tricks. Jeslyn Krebs, who dished out three assists, and Hannah Gawne (1a) each scored twice.

Zoe Dillling needed just five saves to earn the win in goal.

Friday, April 9, they blasted Ephrata 21-4. April 9. Dawson and Kimmel (2a) both racked up five goals as L-S built a 12-1 halftime advantage. Cissne and Gawne both notched hat tricks with one assist while Drummond (3a) scored twice. Krebs led with six assists and scored once along with Olivia Poley and Joselyn Saurbaugh.

At home Wednesday, L-S slipped to 3-3 with an 11-9 loss to an undefeated Hempfield squad (6-0). The Knights outscored the hosts by one goal in each half. Dawson, Kimmel and Gawne each notched hat tricks.

BASEBALL

The baseball team, wrapping up March with a 3-2 loss to CV, is riding a four-game win streak as they move through April. The Pioneers posted a 6-2 win at Solanco Friday, April 9 and then topped Ephrata 4-1 on the road Monday night.

"The guys have continued to work hard since that loss and are taking advantage of opportunities," said head coach Jeff Swarr. "Jack Swarr and Caleb Guyer have pitched without their best stuff and just compete to give us opportunity to win. The entire lineup has, at some point, contributed, this includes Owen Fikkert (SS), Gio Malatesta (2B), and Alex Knapp, Jake Long and Isaiah Parido (OF)," he added. "We are playing extremely well defensively and this provides us the opportunity to make the other teams work for their runs."

L-S led from start to finish at Solanco, scoring three in the top of the first and giving up two in the bottom half. They out hit the Mules 10-4, took advantage of two errors and six walks to pull away.

Gia Malatesta (2RBI), Owen Fikkert and Joey Doolittle each connected for two hits while Alex Knapp, Braedon Karpathios, Caleb Guyer, and Isaiah Parido added one hit each.

On the hill, Jack Swarr scattered four hits and Gehrig Harsh struck out four in relief.

At Ephrata, L-S again took the early lead, plating three of their four runs in the first two innings and holding on for the 4-1 win.

Guyer struck out six and walked four in four innings of work. Peyton Harsh struck out three, walked one and gave up two hits to earn the save.

L-S opened crossover play Wednesday at Warwick and suffered a 6-0 setback.

BOYS' LACROSSE

After a heartbreaking 11-10 loss to CV, the boys' lacrosse team regrouped, knocking off previously undefeated Ephrata 13-7 on Friday, April 9 and then dominating visiting Warwick three days later.

Key starts have played a key role to those victories. The Pioneers led 3-0 in the first quarter and 7-2 at the half against the Mounts and came out even stronger against Warwick, staking an 8-0 first quarter advantage and never looking back in Monday's ten goal win.

A balanced offense effort was also instrumental. Stewart McClain tallied five goals and two assists against the Mounts while Conner Nolt and Collin Sullivan both posted hat tricks.

Against the Warriors, it was Nolt with a team-high four goals (1a) while McClain (2a) and Sulllivan (2a) each scored three times and Jack Filius, who scored once against Ephrata, added two. Barrett Denlinger and Zach Labreque (1a) rounded out the scoring against the Warriors while Chase Barber added once against the Mounts.

Bryce Thomas recorded a combined 25 saves in the wins.

Lampeter's second encounter with the Bucks came Wednesday night April 14. A determined Pioneer squad built a 10-2 first half lead and held on for a 13-11 thriller.

McClain's five goals were a game high. Denlinger added a hat trick and Lebreque scored twice.

TRACK

Monday's 79-71 home win against Ephrata was a collective effort by the Pioneers with more than a handful of key performers.

"It was a barn burner," said head coach Cal Esh. "Any of 12 events "won the meet" for us, putting us over the top: the 4x800, 100, 1600, 400, 800, 200, 3200, 4x400, shot, discus, long jump and pole vault."

Teagan Weaver won the 100 and 200m sprints and the long jump. Colin Whitaker won the mile and the 3200 and joined forces with Luka Vranich, Arik Harnish and Nate Eberly to get things rolling with a 4x800 relay win.

Vranich went on to win the 400 while Harnish took the 800. Both, along with Eberly and Marty Breneman secured the 4x400 relay.

In the field, Jordan Thode, Zach Shelley, and Elijah Carr swept the discus, Shelley won the shot and Aidan Wiley was tops in the pole vault.

The going was a bit tougher for the girls who were dealt a 94-56 loss but still turned in some highlights. Maggie Swarr was the top point-getter with a hat trick of firsts, taking the discus and shot and leading a sweep in the javelin with Jada Willard and Kelsey McTaggart rounding out the place winners.

Cam Coleman was tops in the pole vault, Madison Malcolm won the 300 hurdles and was second in the 110s while Elly Bruner added seconds in the long and high jumps.
