Sharing good news with the community

There was no shortage of good news that was shared in the Community Courier in 2023. Readers were introduced to charitable people in the community, and they learned about special events and activities by nonprofit groups, churches and school students.

In 2023, readers met Adah Lake of Morgantown, a Twin Valley Middle School student who founded Kindness Blooms, which provides free bouquets of freshly picked flowers from the family's backyard to community members. The flowers are displayed on a flower stand in from of the family home. Adah gave away more than 30 bouquets last summer and plans to continue the effort next year.

Other youths who actively did their part to serve the community were members of Girl Scout Troop 1080 of Birdsboro who created a Blessing Box filled with free food for people in need. The girls installed the box as part of their Bronze Award project. The food sharing box is located next to the borough police station at the corner of Cinder and Mill streets in Birdsboro.

Local libraries were busy places this past year, including the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro, which welcomed a new director, Mirielle Vasselli, who was previously the circulation librarian at the Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, N.J. Vasselli said she was attracted to the smaller local library because it allows her to work directly with members of the community. One of Vasselli's most recent duties was to welcome Miranda Moore, Miss Pennsylvania 2023, who was the guest speaker at a children's story time program in November.

Churches were also active in the community. 2023 marked the 10th anniversary of Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond, a ministry in which community members volunteer to help local homeowners in need with repair projects. Workers also complete projects at public areas, including local parks. This past summer, more than 150 volunteers worked at sites in the area. A "God's Hands at Work" sign was posted at each work site.

St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC) in Knauertown also continues its activities, including a free community meal served on the last Friday of each month from 5:30 to 8 p.m. St. Peter UCC also hosted a garden bazaar in 2023 as well as a flower show by the Elverson Garden Club.

St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, led by pastor Jim Farnsworth, dedicated St. Mark's Community Care Center Shower and Laundry in July of 2023. Farnsworth said that the facility will serve Birdsboro's homeless population and others who may have water issues or nonworking appliances. Other ministries at St. Mark's include a community garden, a food pantry and a group for senior citizens.

In June of 2023, Twin Valley High School students created a mosaic at the Peter J. Camiel Turnpike Service Plaza located near the Morgantown exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The artwork highlights historical and natural sites in the region, including French Creek State Park, Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, the Daniel Boone Homestead and Crow's Nest Preserve, as well as local wildlife.

Owen J. Roberts High School hosted its own Special Olympics in May of 2023. More than 90 athletes took park in the fitness-based games. including a flying disc toss, an obstacle course, a bean bag toss, badminton and soccer games and a 50-yard dash. Following the games, the culminating group activity was a water balloon toss.

Groups that were active in 2023 included the Honey Brook Community Partnership, which presented Harmony Day; the Great Marsh Institute, which hosted nature activities at its location; Anchored Ministries of Elverson, which continues to supply free clothing to people in need; and the Honey Brook Lions Club and Honey Brook Women's Club, which both distributed community grants.
