Smith Inducted Into Athletic Hall Of Fame
The Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame posthumously inducted Ryan Smith into the Hall of Fame for 2022 at halftime during the L-S football game against Cocalico on Sept. 23.
During his basketball career at L-S, Ryan scored over 1,000 points and tallied over 560 rebounds and 84 blocked shots. He ended his career with a 40% 3-point shooting percentage and a 62% 2-point percentage. He had his career best game in the league playoffs in 2018 with 39 points and 21 rebounds. He was named a section all-star two times and in his senior year was the Section 2 Player of the Year. He was also a second-team all-state player. The team won multiple tournaments and two section championships; qualified for the league, district, and state tournaments; and won the first league championship in school history.
After graduation, he attended East Stroudsburg University (ESU). Ryan averaged 16.9 points and 8.0 rebounds while helping lead the Warriors to the PSAC semifinals and the NCAA Division II Tournament. He had one of the top freshman seasons in program history, ranking second at ESU in points (473), points per game, rebounds (225), rebounds per game, field goals (177), and free throws (107) among the Warriors freshmen. He scored 20 points in 10 games, had 10 double-doubles, scored a career-high 31 points against Kutztown, and had 30 points and 13 rebounds in a 106-99 overtime loss against West Liberty in the NCAA Division II Tournament first round in what was his final collegiate game.
He was the 2018-19 PSAC East Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year and a second team All-PSAC East selection in his only season of collegiate competition. He was an honorary member of the 2019-20 All-PSAC East team.
Ryan was a two-sport athlete at L-S, also playing golf. Coach Chiodo said, "Ryan's positive attitude was contagious. He helped carry on the competitive nature of the L-S golf team, which has carried forward in the years after his graduation."
Ryan played golf four years. During his sophomore year, the team qualified for the league tournament, and he averaged a score of 92. In his junior year, Ryan was named a Section 2 all-star, and the team was section champion and qualified for the league championship tournament. He averaged 86 and played in the first or second position. As a senior, he averaged an 89, played in the second or third position, and was a Lancaster-Lebanon League Honorable Mention All-Star.
Ryan got his start in basketball in the L-S Youth Basketball Program, and the current members of the program formed the line for the Smiths to walk through during the halftime presentation. Accepting the award were Ryan's mother, Kim; his father, Craig, and his brother, Darren.
