Spot's Second Half Rally Falls Short Against LS

The Spartans' second-half effort in the Section Three boys' basketball game at Lampeter-Strasburg fell short as the Pioneers prevailed 59-40 on Friday, January 8. It was the season opener for both teams.

Senior Cory Ream and junior George Rohrbaugh each scored seven points to lead the visitors. Ream sank a pair of three-point baskets and Rohrbaugh added one. Jesse Martin (six points) also added a three-pointer. Jordan Martin and Jonathan Vega each scored five.

Garden Spot trailed 35-12 at the half but outscored L-S in the second half by four points.

Ty Burton was the offensive weapon the Spartans had difficulty stopping. The L-S star scored 28 points on 12 baskets, including a three-pointer. He scored 10 of his points in the second quarter when L-S went on a 21-6 run.

The second stanza was the momentum changing period of the non-league game at Warwick the following afternoon. The Warriors overcame a five-point deficit by outscoring the Spartans 17-12 to make it all even at intermission. Warwick went on a 19-8 run in the third quarter and went on to claim a 57-42 win.

John Dykie was the Spartans' leading scorer. The 6-foot-2 senior put up nine points while Jesse Martin and Jordan Martin each scored eight. Each of the top three Spartan scorers notched a trey while Luke Steiner scored all six of his points from three-point range.

Kai Cipalla poured in 20 points to lead the Warriors' charge. Tate Landis added another 12 points as Garden Spot fell to 0-2.

AIR RIFLE

The Spartans shot past Governor Mifflin by a narrow margin on Tuesday at Shillington. Amanda Wolfe tallied 99 points to lead Spot while Leksi Bender, Tanner Donahue, Magdalene Martin, and Curtis Nolt each recorded a 98 and Veronica Fox shot a 97.

Mifflin's Trevor Schoenen recorded the only score of 100.

WRESTLING

The Spartans hosted Cedar Crest in a league wrestling match on Tuesday, January 12. With the aid of five forfeits by the Falcons, Garden Spot pulled off a 50-21 win.

Garden Spot's Dustin Swanson won the heavyweight match on a first-period pin. Diego Portales pinned his opponent in the 113-pound match while Garrett Gehr dominated Lucas Gerrett 25-10 for a technical fall at 138.

Garden Spot's Josiah Smucker came away with a 6-0 decision at 120.

The Falcons claimed three pins, including back-to-back bouts at the 172- and 189-pound classes. In the battle at 132, Taylor Gehman escaped with a slim 4-2 margin of victory over Jeremy Schilling.

Three days earlier, Garden Spot was at the Conestoga Valley Quads where they took first place in five weight classes. Portalo pulled off a 12-0 major decision in the championship match of the 113-pound class. In claiming the 126-pound class, Mason Casey earned first-period pins in both the semifinal match and the first-place battle, defeating Governor Mifflin teammates Joseph Irizarry and Mike Casanova, respectively.

Gehr came off a 17-2 technical in the quarterfinals of the 138-pound brackets as he went on to pin New Oxford's Jacob Pope. In a classic battle, he topped CV's Keaton Fischer 14-9.

Aaron Marin pinned New Oxford's Trenton Fitz in the title bout of the 145-pound class.

Swanson won the 285-pound class with a pin, taking down Mifflin's Daylen Morey.

Several Spartans finished third in the competition, including Adam Hahn (106), Smucker (120), Schilling (126), Jayden Redcay (152), Josh Martin (160) and Musser, who pinned New Oxford's Josh Getz at 215.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

In their season-opener at home, the Spartans fell to Lampeter-Strasburg on Friday, January 8. The Pioneers earned a 57-39 Section Three victory as both Maggie Swarr and Emma Drouillard scored 14 points. Between these two leading scorers and teammate Hailey Leaman, the Pioneers connected on eight three-pointers.

Garden Spot's Erin Gonzalez tied for the game-leading total of 14 points. She nailed a pair of treys in the process while teammate Taylor Soehner poured in 12 points and Caroline Martin added seven points.
