It's fitting that a car show to benefit Columbia High School's theater department is open to any type of vehicle, because the entries in the past have been a bit dramatic.

"Someone brought a hang glider once," said David Kinser, who helps to organize the show. "One year, a guy brought an antique camper. You can bring your lawnmower, bring your bicycle. If it's got wheels, you can bring it."

The show, called "Driving 4 Drama," will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. A rain date is set for the same time on Saturday, Aug. 22.

This is the seventh year for the show, which began as a way to support two subjects that are important to the Kinser family and other employees of South 16th Street Garage in Columbia.

"My dad, my older brother, really my whole family has been involved in Columbia's theater department," said Shane Kinser, one of the show organizers. "And all of us here being involved in cars, it was a way to combine two things we've always been passionate about."

The show started small at Glatfelter Field but soon outgrew that space and moved to the high school campus. Then, it got too big for that site and moved to the church grounds last year. In the past, the show has attracted hundreds of cars.

A big appeal is the wide variety of trophies entrants can take home, including a 72-inch Best of Show trophy, awarded by the organizers. The organizers also choose Best Paint, Best Interior and Best Engine.

The rest of the awards are determined by businesses who sponsor them or given out by Columbia theater kids. A Director's Trophy is awarded by Janet Wood, the theater department head.

"We have well over 30 sponsored trophies," Shane said. "Everybody is welcome to this show, and anybody can get a trophy."

Theater kids will run a concession stand on-site at the event, and funds will also be raised through both a silent auction and a 50/50 giveaway. Auction items include gift cards and gift baskets donated by local businesses and individuals. A lemonade stand will be set up on-site, and food trucks will include Tank's Taters, Halo's Eatery and Kona Ice. A DJ will provide music during the event.

All money raised benefits the theater department.

"We give between $4,000 and $8,000 each year, so we've donated more than $25,000 to this program," David said.

Funds support the fall play and spring musical put on by the middle school and high school, and money also goes to the costs of students attending the state International Thespian Conference.

"This money helps them reach a lot further than they would be able to otherwise," said Tim Pentz, one of the car show organizers, who added that it costs thousands of dollars to attend the conference. "This gives the kids a lot more opportunities."

Additional organizers of the show are Travis Kinser and James Weaver. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or pop-up tents to set up on the grassy areas of the church grounds and then spend a few hours enjoying the cars and supporting the theater department.

"Bring your car, your truck, your motorcycle, or just come out and see what's there," Shane said. "Everyone is welcome."
